To Reach the High Frontier: A History of U.S. Launch Vehicles by Roger D. Launius,
Access -- no single word better describes the primary concern of the exploration and development of space. Every participant in space activities -- civil, military, scientific, or commercial -- needs affordable, reliable, frequent, and flexible access to space. To Reach the High Frontier details the histories of the various space access vehicles developed in the United States since the birth of the space age in 1957. Even with four decades of public and private effort, access to space remains problematic. The core of the U.S.'s present launch capability, the Atlas, Titan, and Delta launchers, though much evolved, originated as military ballistic missiles in the 1950s. In fact, all U.S. launchers, including NASA's Saturn and Space Shuttle systems, have involved significant government input, as well as the efforts of private contractors. The technical challenge of reaching space with chemical rockets, the high costs associated with space launch, the long lead times necessary for scheduling flights, and the poor reliability of the rockets themselves show launch vehicles to be the space program's most difficult challenge. This book presents case studies in the history of all the major rockets built by the United States. Each study has been written by a specialist knowledgeable about the vehicle described and places each system in the larger context of the history of spaceflight.

On July 20,1968, Neil Armstrong took man's first steps on the moon. Roughly one billion awestruck people watched the lunar landing on television, but very few realized how close it came to disaster. "The History Channel to deliver the ultimate 35th anniversary celebration of this world-changing event. Experience the ultimate insider's view of the Apollo space program with the man who served as NASA's plans to send men to Saturn by 1970. Take a nostalgic trip back to the early days of the space shuttle. The following programs are included in this two-volume set: "Failure Is Not An Option"- Retired NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz recalls the whiz kid atmosphere of the space program's early days and the exploits of the astronauts who took our dreams to the moon. "Code Name: Project Orion"- Explore the grand dreams of the top-secret U.S. space program in the 1950s. Renowned physicists like Freeman Dyson discuss visions of battleship-sized rockets and spaceships hitched to comets. "Modern Marvels: Apollo 13"- An unexpected disaster leaves the crew of Apollo 13 lost in space. In many ways, this failed moon mission is one of NASA's finest moments "Modern Marvels: Space Shuttle"- The complete story of the shuttle, from its conception the 1950s to its triumphant launch in 1981. Plus, an exclusive peek at the next-generation space shuttle, the futuristic X-33.

Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster - The Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) is the rocket that provides most of the thrust required to launch the Space Shuttle into Low Earth orbit. Individually, it is the largest rocket motor ever flown; in a launch configuration, two SRBs plus the space shuttle main engine combine to produce more thrust than even the enormous Saturn V moon rocket.

Space Shuttle Challenger - Space Shuttle Challenger (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-099) was NASA's second Space Shuttle orbiter to be put into service, after Columbia. Its maiden voyage was on April 4, 1983, and it made eight further round trips to low earth orbit before exploding 73 seconds into the launch of its tenth mission, on January 28, 1986.

Space Shuttle program - NASA's Space Shuttle, officially called Space Transportation System (STS), is the United States government's sole manned launch vehicle currently in service. The winged shuttle orbiter is launched vertically, carrying usually five to seven astronauts and up to about 22,700 kg (50,000 lbs) of payload into low earth orbit.

Shuttle Derived Launch Vehicle - NASA has decided to pursue the design and construction of two new launchers, both based on technology and infrastructure developed for the US Space Shuttle program. These launchers would replace the Space Shuttle and supply the launch services necessary to fulfill the Vision for Space Exploration.

Nasa Space - Nasa Space Lost In Space The daring, revolutionary NASA that sent Neil Armstrong to the moon has lost its meteoric vision, says journalist nasa space and space enthusiast Greg Klerkx. NASA, he contends, has devolved from a pioneer of space exploration into a factionalized bureaucracy focused primarily on its own survival. And as a result, humans haven t ventured beyond Earth orbit for three decades. Klerkx argues that after its wildly successful Apollo program, NASA clung fiercely to the spotlight by ...
